This extraordinary antique Persian Shahsavan kilim bag is a rare and vibrant example of tribal textile artistry, masterfully woven by the Shahsavan nomads of northwestern Iran. Likely dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, the bag is a fine specimen of both aesthetic richness and utilitarian craftsmanship.

Expertly crafted using the slit-weave tapestry technique, this double-panel bag features a dynamic and colourful display of traditional Shahsavan motifs. The upper and lower faces are adorned with a brilliant repeating "flame" or "pine tree" motif, rendered in jewel-like hues of coral red, sky blue, pistachio green, ivory, and indigo, all against a clean ivory ground. These motifs, symbolic of fertility and protection, are framed by intricately patterned red borders with curling vine elements.

The central panel between the two bag faces contains highly unusual and graphic stylised bird or serpent-like figures, arranged symmetrically in a vivid orange and yellow field, adding both visual contrast and tribal symbolism. The surrounding bands display rosettes, diamond medallions, and multicoloured checkerboard borders, contributing to the richness of design.

Functionally, this piece would have been used as a khorjin (saddlebag), carrying the intricacy of a ceremonial textile. The natural dyes retain their vibrancy, and the wool has aged beautifully with a soft patina.

This kilim bag is not only a rare collectable but also a striking decorative textile, offering deep cultural heritage, vibrant artistry, and an intimate glimpse into the lives of the Shahsavan nomads.

Authentic vintage and antique Persian kilim bags are handwoven with silk and wool. Each one is an exceptional work of art and unique.

It’s 1990 all over again!

In the early 1990’s, my wife I were obsessed with hand woven, vegetable dyed Turkish carpets from Azeri/Woven Legends. We spent so much time at ABC Carpet & Home in NYC, we became good friends with the head rug buyer!! We haven’t purchased a rug in years, but I found a wonderful Woven Legends carpet at Shopvintagerugs and bought myself an early birthday present. The rug was shipped from Pakistan on Monday, made its way to Dubai, then Boston, Memphis and finally arrived to us today. I couldn’t be happier!
