This vintage European loom tapestry depicts a charming French garden scene reminiscent of 18th-century Rococo style. The tapestry illustrates elegantly dressed aristocratic figures engaged in leisurely activities amidst a lush, ornate garden setting. On the left, a musician plays a lute while seated on a stone bench, entertaining attentive women in lavish gowns. In the centre, couples dance gracefully on a manicured lawn surrounded by flowering bushes and trees, their flowing garments rendered in soft pastel shades of pink, lavender, yellow, and blue. To the right, a woman is seated in front of a mirror as an attendant holds a tray, highlighting a refined moment of courtly preparation. The background features classical garden architecture with columns, balustrades, and ornamental urns, enhancing the scene's sophisticated ambience.
The tapestry's delicate weaving and detailed portrayal capture the elegance and romance of the French aristocracy's garden parties, evoking a sense of nostalgia for an opulent bygone era. The warm, earthy tones combined with soft greens and gentle highlights create a harmonious and inviting atmosphere, making this piece a beautiful example of vintage European textile art.
Jacquard's loom invention in 1804 enabled single warp control and revolutionised weaving. Since then, there have been numerous improvements to the ancient drawloom, which allowed pictorial repeats in weavings as early as the pre-Christian era. Finally, after almost two centuries, single warp control via punched cards has been replaced by electronic means, resulting in products that are now suitable as a woven base for the art market.
In the early days of jacquard machines, they were used to weave delicate damasks and fabrics for interior textiles, making them affordable for the broader population. However, jacquard tapestries, machine-produced in wool, were also available, and according to a German law passed in 1913, they had to be described as "imitation Gobelins" to distinguish them from woven tapestries.
Authentic vintage and antique European jacquard loom tapestries and textiles are woven with cotton, polyester and viscose. Each one is an exceptional work of art.
