This vintage European loom tapestry, titled "The Manor", beautifully captures a serene countryside scene reminiscent of pastoral life in the heart of Europe. Woven with rich detail and earthy tones, the tapestry depicts a quaint riverside village framed by lush trees and rolling hills.
On the right side, a charming manor-style cottage with a steeply pitched roof stands nestled among towering pine trees, with stone steps leading to the entrance. To the left, a rustic wooden bridge spans a calm river, where ducks glide peacefully, adding to the idyllic atmosphere. Further back, more traditional homes dot the forested landscape. Atop a distant hill, a grand manor or castle overlooks the village, adding a touch of medieval nobility to the scene.
The piece is bordered with a thick, intricately patterned frame featuring a scrolling vine and leaf motif in shades of green, gold, and red, and includes hanging loops for display. This tapestry is not only a decorative textile but also a nostalgic window into the charm and craftsmanship of European rural life.
Jacquard's loom invention in 1804 enabled single warp control and revolutionised the weaving process. Since then, numerous improvements have been made to the ancient drawloom, which enabled pictorial repeats in weavings as early as the pre-Christian era. Finally, after almost two centuries, single warp control via punched cards has been replaced by electronic means, resulting in products that are now suitable as a woven base for the art market.
In the early days of jacquard machines, they were used to weave delicate damasks and fabrics for interior textiles, making them affordable for the broader population. However, jacquard tapestries, machine-produced in wool, were also available, and according to a German law passed in 1913, they had to be described as "imitation gobelins" to distinguish them from woven tapestries.
