This antique Caucasian Karachopf Kazak rug, woven circa 1880–1910 in the South Caucasus region, exemplifies the bold geometry and rich natural dyes typical of tribal Kazak weaving. The design centres on a pair of latch-hook medallions in green and red set against a deep indigo field, surrounded by stylised motifs such as ram’s horns, stars, and crosses symbolising protection and vitality. Its vibrant palette of indigo, madder red, pistachio green, coral, and ivory is derived from vegetable dyes that have mellowed beautifully over time. The border features a rhythmic sequence of rosettes and star motifs framed by serrated guard stripes, adding dynamic balance to the composition. Hand-knotted in wool on a wool foundation with medium coarse knots, the rug retains the integrity and expressive power that make Karachopf Kazaks among the most admired of all Caucasian village rugs.
Authentic vintage and antique Caucasian rugs are hand-knotted with wool. Each one is an exceptional work of art and unique.
