This beautiful antique Caucasian Shirvan tribal wool rug is a vivid example of the region’s powerful geometric tradition, woven in the late 19th to early 20th century. Dominated by a bold, stepped medallion design, the rug features three large diamond-shaped lozenges aligned on a central axis. These medallions are framed by a serrated, zigzag motif in contrasting shades of ivory, black, and red, adding striking movement and dimension to the composition.
The field is a deep terracotta red, populated with small tribal motifs including birds, rosettes, and symbolic emblems, offering both charm and cultural storytelling. Rich golden yellows and earthy browns appear in the corner spandrels and add warmth and complexity to the layout.
Surrounding the field is a beautiful set of borders: a main border decorated with stylised floral vine motifs, flanked by finely detailed guard stripes filled with leaf and scroll patterns meticulously hand-knotted in soft, naturally dyed wool.
This rug is not just a functional piece, but a work of tribal art, showcasing the Shirvan weavers’ mastery of bold composition, intricate detailing, and expressive symbolism. Ideal for traditional, bohemian, or eclectic spaces seeking authenticity and narrative richness.
Authentic vintage and antique Caucasian rugs are hand-knotted with wool. Each one is an exceptional work of art and one of a kind.
