This vintage Sumba Pahikung ikat is a loom-woven cotton textile from the Indonesian island of Sumba, crafted using the traditional supplementary warp technique known as Pahikung. Created on a backstrap loom, it features a central anthropomorphic figure symbolising ancestral or spiritual presence, framed by intricate geometric borders in earthy tones of red, black, ochre, and beige derived from natural dyes. The symmetrical motifs and balanced composition reflect themes of protection, fertility, and cosmic order, embodying the deep cultural and ritual significance of Sumbanese weaving traditions, where such textiles were used in ceremonies, as heirlooms, and as markers of social status.
Authentic vintage and antique Ikat textiles are loomwoven and handwoven with cotton. Each one is an exceptional work of art and one of a kind.
