This vintage Bolivian Aymara aguayo textile is a striking example of traditional Andean weaving, crafted from camelid wool, likely alpaca or llama, valued for its warmth and durability. The textile features a predominantly deep black field, lending it a bold, grounded presence, contrasted by vibrant woven bands running horizontally through the centre.

These decorative stripes are filled with intricate geometric patterns in bright tones of red, pink, green, and white, symbolising elements of nature and community identity in Aymara culture. Indigenous women traditionally used Aguayos like this one to carry children or goods on their backs, and they often hold personal or cultural significance.

The balance of minimalism and detail, along with its use of natural fibres and dyes, makes this piece both utilitarian and deeply expressive, a living artefact of Bolivia’s rich highland heritage.

Authentic antique and vintage Bolivian textiles are hand-woven with wool. Each one is an exceptional work of art and unique.

Pictures are taken in natural light to portray the most realistic colours possible. Due to the handmade and preloved nature, slight imperfections and flaws are not defects.

Our textiles are professionally restored, and the fringes secured, ensuring many more years of life.
