This vibrant vintage Indian Phulkari textile bursts with colour and intricate folk symbolism, showcasing the rich embroidery tradition of Punjab. Worked on a deep black cotton base, the textile features an exuberant array of geometric and floral motifs, meticulously stitched in bright silk threads, vivid pinks, bold blues, saffron yellows, verdant greens, and crisp whites.
At its heart lies a symmetrical central square framed by starbursts, stylised flowers, and repeating borders that ripple outward like a radiant mandala. The embroidery is densely packed, using traditional darning stitches worked from the reverse, a hallmark of true Phulkari craftsmanship. Mirror work elements and stepped chevron patterns around the edges add to the dynamic energy of the composition.
This piece likely served as a ceremonial shawl or dowry cloth, treasured for both its aesthetic brilliance and cultural meaning. It reflects not just artisanal skill, but the joy, identity, and storytelling of Punjabi village life.
