This vintage European loom tapestry beautifully depicts a serene countryside scene featuring an old stone mill with a large water wheel. The mill is nestled among lush greenery, surrounded by dense foliage and flowering plants along the water’s edge. A calm river or pond reflects the natural landscape, enhancing the peaceful ambiance. In the background, soft rolling hills and trees extend toward the horizon, rendered in gentle pastel hues that evoke an early morning or late afternoon light.

The tapestry is framed with a detailed border of intertwined leafy and floral patterns in shades of green and soft pink, complementing the natural theme of the scene. The craftsmanship highlights the subtle blending of colors and fine textural detail typical of European woven tapestries, making this piece a timeless representation of rural tranquility and traditional artistry.

Jacquard's loom invention in 1804 enabled single warp control and revolutionised weaving. Since then, there have been numerous improvements to the ancient draw loom, which allowed pictorial repeats in weavings as early as the pre-Christian era. Finally, after almost two centuries, single warp control via punched cards has been replaced by electronic means, resulting in products that are now suitable as a woven base for the art market.

In the early days of jacquard machines, they were used to weave delicate damasks and fabrics for interior textiles, making them affordable for the wider population. However, jacquard tapestries, machine-produced in wool, were also available, and according to a German law passed in 1913, they had to be described as "imitation gobelins" to distinguish them from woven tapestries.

Authentic vintage and antique European jacquard loom tapestries and textiles are woven with cotton, polyester and viscose. Each one is an exceptional work of art.

It’s 1990 all over again!

In the early 1990’s, my wife I were obsessed with hand woven, vegetable dyed Turkish carpets from Azeri/Woven Legends. We spent so much time at ABC Carpet & Home in NYC, we became good friends with the head rug buyer!! We haven’t purchased a rug in years, but I found a wonderful Woven Legends carpet at Shopvintagerugs and bought myself an early birthday present. The rug was shipped from Pakistan on Monday, made its way to Dubai, then Boston, Memphis and finally arrived to us today. I couldn’t be happier!
