This vintage Scandinavian Rya rug bursts with bold, playful energy, showcasing a shaggy, high-pile texture in vivid, eye-catching colours. Set against a fiery orange background, the carpet features scattered abstract and geometric shapes in deep purples, emerald greens, electric blues, soft pinks, and pops of black, creating a dynamic and almost painterly effect. The thick black border frames the composition, giving it a strong visual edge. Originating from the mid-20th-century Scandinavian design movement, Rya rugs are renowned for their luxurious, cosy pile and blend of folk tradition with modernist aesthetics, making them beloved statement pieces in retro and contemporary interiors.
The vintage carpet was masterfully hand-executed with the finest wool, following traditional and refined weaving techniques, and reached the Middle Ages.
Its style, Rya, developed centuries ago in Scandinavia to protect people, especially mariners living off the sea, from severe weather conditions.
Despite their historical heritage, the antique bears have an exceptionally modern design, set in the aesthetic standards of the 1950s.
Pictures are taken in natural light to portray the most realistic colours possible. Due to these rugs' handmade and preloved nature, slight imperfections and flaws are not defects.

In the early 1990’s, my wife I were obsessed with hand woven, vegetable dyed Turkish carpets from Azeri/Woven Legends. We spent so much time at ABC Carpet & Home in NYC, we became good friends with the head rug buyer!! We haven’t purchased a rug in years, but I found a wonderful Woven Legends carpet at Shopvintagerugs and bought myself an early birthday present. The rug was shipped from Pakistan on Monday, made its way to Dubai, then Boston, Memphis and finally arrived to us today. I couldn’t be happier!
