This antique Turkish Bergama rug is a superb example of the bold tribal weaving traditions of western Anatolia. Hand-knotted in wool, it features a dramatic central hexagonal medallion flanked by angular geometric motifs and stylized rosettes, set against a vibrant crimson field. The design is richly decorated with hooked forms, latch motifs, and symbolic patterns, all rendered in deep shades of madder red, indigo, ivory, and black.
The borders are equally striking, with a primary band of meandering “key” motifs framed by narrow guard borders filled with small diamond and cross designs. Each element reflects the strength and symmetry characteristic of Bergama rugs, prized for their robust construction and bold, expressive designs.
The wool pile, woven on a strong wool foundation, carries a rich patina from age, giving the rug a warm, time-softened character. With its tribal dynamism, geometric strength, and authentic Anatolian heritage, this Bergama rug is not only a functional textile but also a collectible piece of cultural artistry.
