This antique Caucasian Shirvan wool rug showcases a finely detailed and vibrant composition, emblematic of the highland weaving traditions of the eastern Caucasus. The deep blue central field is densely populated with a symmetrical repeat of stylised boteh motifs, rendered in alternating hues of crimson, ivory, and soft orange. These motifs, often symbolising fertility and protection, create a rhythmic visual flow across the field.
Surrounding the central panel is a striking set of borders. The inner guard features a floral rosette chain on a rich red ground, while the wide main border displays dynamic, flame-like motifs in vibrant reds, blues, greens, and ivories. These angular forms, interspersed with small hooked symbols, convey a sense of energy and movement, characteristic of Shirvan rugs.
The outermost border returns to a rosette pattern, harmonising with the interior motifs and completing the composition. The rug’s natural wool pile, dyed with traditional vegetal pigments, has aged gracefully, lending it a warm patina and historical charm.
Refined yet full of tribal spirit, this Shirvan rug is a collectable piece that offers both artistic depth and decorative versatility, ideal for enriching classic or eclectic interiors.
