This lovely antique Caucasian Shirvan Maharamat rug fragment is a dazzling display of complex tribal geometry and rich symbolism, originating from the Shirvan region of the eastern Caucasus. Likely woven in the late 19th century, this piece captures the region’s intricate design sensibilities and masterful use of colour.

At the heart of the composition is a bold, diagonal latticework of nested diamonds, each enclosing finely drawn hooked rosettes and crosses, woven in a striking palette of deep indigo, madder red, ivory, and saffron. The dense arrangement of motifs creates a powerful visual rhythm, typical of Maharamat patterns, known for their repetition and balance.

The main border features a striking “leaf and calyx” or stylised floral rosette motif, executed in alternating shades of red, green, and ivory against a black ground, creating a strong contrast and framing the energetic interior beautifully. Additional minor borders filled with finely stepped geometric forms and intricate outlines add further depth and texture to the piece.

Though a fragment, the rug retains its full visual impact and historic character. The wool is finely spun and naturally dyed, showing a beautiful aged patina and subtle abrash throughout. This piece would make a stunning wall display or collectable textile, an authentic expression of Caucasian tribal artistry at its most refined.

Authentic vintage and antique Caucasian rugs are hand-knotted with wool. Each one is an exceptional work of art and one of a kind.

Pictures are taken in natural light to portray the most realistic colours possible. Due to these rugs' handmade and preloved nature, slight imperfections and flaws are not defects.

Our rugs are professionally restored, and the fringes secured, ensuring many more years of life. In addition, we advise using a rug pad with a grip back to keep your rug in position and to smooth out any wrinkles from shipping. It’s 1990 all over again!

In the early 1990’s, my wife I were obsessed with hand woven, vegetable dyed Turkish carpets from Azeri/Woven Legends. We spent so much time at ABC Carpet & Home in NYC, we became good friends with the head rug buyer!! We haven’t purchased a rug in years, but I found a wonderful Woven Legends carpet at Shopvintagerugs and bought myself an early birthday present. The rug was shipped from Pakistan on Monday, made its way to Dubai, then Boston, Memphis and finally arrived to us today. I couldn’t be happier!
