Size: 3 x 2.5 ft.
Origin: South America
Circa: 1960s
Material: Pure Wool
This striking vintage South American textile is a traditional handwoven wool piece, likely originating from the Andean regions of Peru or Bolivia. The textile is composed of two distinct sections: a richly patterned upper half and a solid black lower panel. The top portion features vivid horizontal bands in deep reds, burgundy, and purples, interlaced with delicate geometric designs in white and pink, including diamond and chevron motifs typical of Andean symbolism. Intricate ikat or supplementary weft techniques form repeating zigzags and stepped forms, possibly representing mountains, rivers, or agricultural terraces. Bright multicoloured stripes, yellow, green, red, and orange, intersect the central portion, adding rhythm and vibrancy. The bold contrast between the ornate upper half and the plain black wool below enhances its ceremonial character, suggesting it may have been part of a traditional garment or carrying cloth (such as an aguayo or lliqlla). A beautiful expression of indigenous identity, this textile is both culturally significant and visually dynamic.
Authentic vintage and antique South American textiles are hand-woven with wool. Each one is an exceptional work of art and unique.
