This vintage Peruvian aguayo textile is a stunning example of Andean weaving tradition, crafted with wool and dyed in vibrant natural hues. Dominated by warm tones of red, pink, and earthy browns, the textile features intricate geometric motifs, including diamonds and chevrons, woven in tight, repetitive patterns that reflect deep cultural symbolism.
Two bold horizontal black-brown bands segment the composition, creating rhythm and visual structure, while occasional multicoloured embroidery accents lend a playful and artisanal touch. The top and bottom edges are bordered with traditional stepped designs in green and black against a rose-colored background, echoing motifs used by the Quechua and Aymara people.
Historically used by Indigenous women to carry babies, food, or daily goods on their backs, this aguayo tells not only a story of utility but also one of identity, heritage, and artistic legacy. Today, it makes for a striking decorative piece or textile collectable.
Authentic antique and vintage Peruvian textiles are hand-woven with wool. Each one is an exceptional work of art and unique.
