This beautiful vintage Indonesian Ulos Batak textile is a radiant example of ceremonial weaving from the Batak people of North Sumatra. Crafted in a vertical format with a finely balanced structure, the textile features bands of intricate geometric motifs woven in deep maroon, amber, burnt orange, and golden yellow threads, symbolising protection, unity, and ancestral heritage.
The central field is filled with repeating diamond and linear patterns, flanked by stylised floral emblems on the outer red bands. In between, the cloth displays lines of Batak script, often conveying blessings, names, or spiritual messages. Accents of shimmering threadwork lend subtle texture and ceremonial richness to the design.
Finished with delicate black and red fringes and bold red tassels on the corners, this ulos is more than a textile; it is a cultural heirloom, traditionally used in rituals of birth, marriage, and kinship. Perfect as a wall hanging or collector’s piece, it carries with it the warmth, symbolism, and soul of Batak tradition.
Authentic vintage and antique Indonesian textiles are handwoven with cotton. Each one is an exceptional work of art and unique.
