This antique Caucasian Shahsavan Soumak bag face is a masterful example of tribal weaving from the Shahsavan nomads of the northwestern Persian-Caucasian borderlands, likely dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. Woven in the intricate Soumak (weft-wrapping) technique, it showcases a rich texture and tight structure that sets it apart from typical knotted pile rugs.
At its heart lies a bold ivory hexagonal medallion filled with hooked motifs and totemic geometric symbols, radiating outward with powerful symmetry. The deep indigo ground is dotted with small cruciform and floral rosette elements in contrasting shades of red, ivory, salmon, and sky blue. The main border is a classic Shahsavan design, a repeating sequence of interlocking "S" or "ram's horn" motifs in vivid hues, symbolising strength and protection.
The rug is framed with minor guard borders of finely drawn diamonds and stepped motifs, each line and colour carefully balanced. Once the face of a utilitarian tribal storage bag (khorjin), this piece now stands alone as a collectable textile testament to the Shahsavan weavers' artistry, symbolism, and nomadic heritage. Ideal as a wall hanging or decorative accent, it carries the spirit and craftsmanship of a bygone era.
