This extraordinary vintage Dagestani Kaitag silk embroidery textile is a radiant expression of the Caucasus' rich artistic heritage, originating from the mountainous region of Dagestan in the eastern Caucasus. Meticulously hand-stitched, likely in the mid-20th century, this Kaitag piece showcases the region’s iconic fusion of bold geometry, swirling floral energy, and symbolic abstraction.
At the centre, a commanding octagonal medallion bursts with intricate arabesques, stylised blossoms, and cruciform forms in vivid hues of saffron yellow, scarlet, forest green, deep blue, and ivory. The symmetrical design radiates outward with mirrored motifs contained in elongated, shield-like panels, creating a sense of movement and spiritual harmony.
The surrounding border, adorned with a sinuous vine of curling tendrils and tulip-like blossoms, reinforces the textile’s ceremonial and ornamental role, traditionally used for dowries, wedding canopies, or treasured heirlooms. The saturated silk threads are applied with chain stitch embroidery onto a cotton ground, producing a rich, textured surface that shimmers subtly with light.
This textile is not only a rare example of Kaitag needlework but also a testament to the enduring cultural identity of Dagestani artisans. Perfect for framing or display, it offers a striking blend of artistry, symbolism, and vibrant color rooted in centuries of tradition.
