This beautiful antique Caucasian Soumak wool kilim rug is a striking example of flatweave craftsmanship from the South Caucasus region, likely dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. Woven using the intricate soumak technique, it features a rich and rhythmic all-over pattern of small square motifs arranged in diagonal waves, forming a mesmerising lattice of movement across the deep, earthy ground.
The pattern is composed of alternating dark and light squares, each containing stylised hooked or leaf-like designs set against a base of deep aubergine, burgundy, and indigo, with highlights of ivory and rust. The stepped border encloses a series of Kufic-style motifs in cream, providing a bold geometric contrast and framing the field with traditional Caucasian flair.
Handwoven entirely in wool, this kilim exhibits both exceptional durability and visual sophistication, making it a remarkable collectable piece that bridges tribal symbolism with refined design sensibility.
Authentic vintage and antique Caucasian Soumak are handmade with wool. Each one is an exceptional work of art and unique.

Our rugs are professionally restored, and the fringes secured, ensuring many more years of life. Additionally, we recommend using a rug pad with a grippy back to keep your rug in place and to smooth out any wrinkles that may have occurred during shipping. Using a rug pad will also safeguard your carpet from deterioration and, therefore, extend the life of your rug.
