This large vintage Persian Senneh wool rug is a striking example of Kurdish craftsmanship, celebrated for its finesse and precision. Woven in the historic town of Sanandaj (formerly Senneh) in western Iran, the rug boasts a refined aesthetic marked by symmetry and detail.
The design centres around a bold diamond medallion set within a larger lozenge shape, creating a layered geometric harmony. The field is filled with a dense herati (fish) pattern, elegantly repeated in a deep red hue. At the same time, the medallion and spandrels contrast with finely detailed botanical and latticework motifs in ivory, navy, and indigo.
The borders are equally elaborate, featuring multiple framing bands that display traditional floral and geometric elements, all carefully delineated with impeccable balance. A particularly charming detail is the stylised depiction of birds and deer woven throughout the border, adding a whimsical, folkloric touch.
Crafted from tightly spun wool on a cotton foundation, this Senneh rug has a notably fine weave, lending it both visual crispness and durability.
