An exquisite antique Persian Farahan Kelleh rug is a masterclass in classical design and proportion, originating from the Farahan district in central Iran, renowned for producing some of the most refined rugs of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The elongated kelleh (gallery) format, traditionally used in Persian reception halls and corridors, allows for a grand, balanced layout that guides the eye along its length.
The field is densely ornamented with a complex Herati design, an elegant repeat of rosettes, diamond-shaped floral motifs, and curling leaves, rendered in soft tones of coral, indigo, dusty blue, and ivory. The floral background is framed by four corner spandrels echoing the form and palette of the central medallion, harmonising the design with a rhythmic symmetry.
The central medallion itself is a jewel-like creation: an eight-pointed form with geometric petals in shades of muted red, tan, and blue, all enclosing a golden circular motif at its heart. Two smaller secondary medallions, placed along the vertical axis, serve as subtle visual anchors, enhancing the composition’s ceremonial structure.
Surrounding the central field is a beautifully proportioned border system. The wide main border features a repeating “turtle” palmette motif, alternating with stylised floral sprays, all delicately outlined in contrasting shades. This is framed by narrow guard borders filled with small-scale rosettes and continuous vine scrolls, which soften the transition between field and frame.
Woven from high-quality wool with a tight, finely knotted structure, this rug not only boasts exceptional durability but also a silky sheen and tactile softness. The natural dyes have mellowed with age, resulting in a richly nuanced, antique patina that enhances the rug’s timeless elegance.
This Farahan Kelleh is not just a decorative piece but a woven document of Persian cultural artistry, ideal for collectors and connoisseurs seeking sophistication, symmetry, and storied craftsmanship.
Authentic vintage and antique Persian rugs are hand-knotted with wool. Each one is an exceptional work of art and unique.
