This vintage Scandinavian Rya rug, dated 1935, is a unique and collectable piece of Nordic textile art. It features a central stylised tree of life motif surrounded by geometric floral blocks in warm tones of salmon pink, cream, mustard, chocolate brown, and ochre. Framed by a darker border and handwoven in plush high-pile wool, this Rya rug blends folkloric symbolism with early modernist Scandinavian design sensibilities. The handwoven date and initials ("S 1935 H") give it a personalised, heirloom quality, making it perfect as a wall hanging or accent in rustic, bohemian, or mid-century interiors.
This vintage pile weave dates back to the time of the Scandinavian rugs' greatest glory. These rugs were made over half a century ago, and to this day, they remain unspoilt by time due to their extraordinary quality and design.
The vintage carpet was masterfully handcrafted with the finest wool, following traditional and refined weaving techniques that date back to the Middle Ages.
Its style, Rya, was developed centuries ago in Scandinavia to protect the people, especially the mariners living off the sea, from the severe weather conditions.
Despite its historical heritage, the antique bears an exceptionally modern design, adhering to the aesthetic standards of the 1950s.
Pictures are taken in natural light to portray the most realistic colours possible. Due to the handmade and preloved nature of these rugs, slight imperfections and flaws are not considered defects.
