Woven in the South Caucasus during the late 19th to early 20th century, the rug features a vertical procession of diamond-shaped medallions, each anchored by intricate hooked motifs and radiating starburst centres. These powerful forms are framed by ivory ram’s horn outlines, classic tribal symbols of protection and strength.
The field is a vivid coral red, densely filled with scattered stylised blossoms and rosettes in indigo, ivory, saffron, and soft green, creating a lively visual rhythm that animates the space between the medallions. Multiple borders frame the composition: a wide main band with floral and cross-like motifs in warm red, contrasted by narrower guard stripes filled with intricate wave and vine forms.
Woven in hand-spun wool and dyed with natural pigments, this Kazak kelleh rug boasts a soft, time-mellowed patina and remarkable durability.
