This pair of vintage Dutch Desso Rya rugs is celebrated for its bold, abstract modernist design and lush, high-pile texture. The rug features a central vertical dark brown line with branching organic red, cream, and ivory shapes, all set against a warm mustard yellow background. Its abstract pattern reflects mid-century Scandinavian and European design trends, emphasising form, colour, and texture over traditional motifs. Desso, a well-known Dutch manufacturer, was famed for producing these shaggy Rya rugs, popular in the 1960s and 1970s for adding warmth, vibrancy, and artistic flair to modern interiors.
These vintage carpets were masterfully hand-executed with the finest wool, following traditional and refined weaving techniques, dating back to the Middle Ages.
Its style, Rya, developed centuries ago in Scandinavia to protect people, especially mariners living off the sea, from severe weather conditions.
Despite their historical heritage, the rugs bear an exceptionally modern design, set in the aesthetic standards of the 1950s.
Pictures are taken in natural light to portray the most realistic colours possible. Due to these rugs' handmade and preloved nature, slight imperfections and flaws are not defects.
Our rugs are professionally cleaned.
