This is a vintage tribal Balouch rug, notable for its deep indigo, dark, earthy tones, and intricate, symbolic patterns. The design centres around two prayer niches (mihrabs), a hallmark of Balouch prayer rugs, each outlined with delicate, serrated edges and filled with vertical tree or comb-like motifs symbolising life or protection. The surrounding field is densely decorated with geometric and floral figures, while multiple narrow borders frame the composition with repeating hooked and stepped patterns, adding complexity and depth. Handwoven by Balouch nomads, this rug reflects their rich weaving tradition, using natural dyes and fine wool, and carries a distinctly rustic, authentic tribal charm.

In the early 1990’s, my wife I were obsessed with hand woven, vegetable dyed Turkish carpets from Azeri/Woven Legends. We spent so much time at ABC Carpet & Home in NYC, we became good friends with the head rug buyer!! We haven’t purchased a rug in years, but I found a wonderful Woven Legends carpet at Shopvintagerugs and bought myself an early birthday present. The rug was shipped from Pakistan on Monday, made its way to Dubai, then Boston, Memphis and finally arrived to us today. I couldn’t be happier!
