This is a fine quality antique Caucasian Kuba wool rug, distinguished by its richly detailed field filled with a repeating lattice of stylised boteh (paisley) or ram's horn motifs. Woven in the Kuba region of the eastern Caucasus, this piece exemplifies the area's reputation for tight weaves, crisp design articulation, and saturated natural dyes.
The rug's design consists of compact, honeycomb-like compartments, each housing a variation of geometric floral or horned emblems, rendered in shades of saffron yellow, midnight blue, coral red, ivory, and soft aqua. These compartmentalised forms are meticulously aligned across a deep indigo ground, creating a sense of rhythm and complexity.
Unlike more open-field Caucasian rugs, this Kuba example leans into decorative density, yet maintains clarity due to its precise knotting and skilful colour contrast. The absence of a wide border draws the eye inward, emphasising the symmetrical repetition of the field and showcasing the technical finesse of the weaver.
A superb collectable, this rug balances tribal character with refined structure, making it suitable for both scholarly appreciation and elegant interior settings.
Authentic vintage and antique Caucasian rugs are hand-knotted with wool. Each one is an exceptional work of art and unique.
Pictures are taken in natural light to portray the most realistic colours possible. Due to the hand-knotted and pre-loved nature of these rugs, slight imperfections and flaws are not considered defects.
Our rugs are professionally restored, and the fringes secured, ensuring many more years of life. Additionally, we recommend using a rug pad with a grippy back to keep your rug in place and to smooth out any wrinkles that may have occurred during shipping. Using a rug pad will also safeguard your carpet from deterioration and, therefore, extend the life of your rug.
