This finely woven beautiful antique Caucasian Shirvan rug is a masterful example of late 19th to early 20th-century craftsmanship, distinguished by its detailed precision, strong tribal character, and a rare inscribed date in the top medallion. The field is organised around a vertical sequence of five large octagonal medallions, each containing intricate abstract motifs—likely stylised representations of animals, buildings, or protective talismans—set against deep indigo, terracotta, and ivory backgrounds.
Surrounding the medallions is a lattice of sharply angular geometric figures and rosettes in rich hues of coral, soft green, ochre, and pale blue, creating a dynamic visual texture that speaks to the artistic complexity of Shirvan weaving traditions. The wear patterns across the field add a soft patina, enhancing the age-worn charm of the rug.
Framed by a series of multicoloured borders with serrated leaf motifs, arrowhead forms, and stepped devices, the design balances energy with structure.
