This wonderful antique Caucasian Karachopf Kazak rug fragment is a striking and rare survivor of 19th-century tribal weaving from the Karachopf region in the South Caucasus. It showcases the bold, graphic aesthetic typical of Kazak rugs, centred around a powerful octagonal medallion flanked by stylised geometric motifs and bracket-like ram’s horn extensions, an ancient symbol of protection and vitality.

The main medallion, rendered in deep crimson, midnight blue, and forest green, is framed by a soft camel-colored field that offers superb contrast and emphasises the vividness of the central design. Flanking rectangular panels display linked latticework motifs, adding balance and symmetry. The corners are filled with checkerboard motifs in alternating hues, lending a playful rhythm to the composition.

The wool is richly dyed using natural pigments, and the handwoven Soumak-style texture gives the rug a tactile presence. Though a fragment, this piece holds tremendous decorative and historical value, perfect as a wall hanging or as a framed textile, capturing the raw strength and spiritual symbolism of Karachopf tribal artistry.

Authentic vintage and antique Caucasian rugs are hand-knotted with wool. Each one is an exceptional work of art and one of a kind.

Pictures are taken in natural light to portray the most realistic colours possible. Due to these rugs' handmade and preloved nature, slight imperfections and flaws are not defects.

Our rugs are professionally restored, and the fringes secured, ensuring many more years of life. In addition, we advise using a rug pad with a grip back to keep your rug in position and to smooth out any wrinkles from shipping. Using a rug pad will also safeguard your carpet from deterioration and, therefore, extend the life of your rug.

Our rugs are professionally cleaned.

It’s 1990 all over again!

In the early 1990’s, my wife I were obsessed with hand woven, vegetable dyed Turkish carpets from Azeri/Woven Legends. We spent so much time at ABC Carpet & Home in NYC, we became good friends with the head rug buyer!! We haven’t purchased a rug in years, but I found a wonderful Woven Legends carpet at Shopvintagerugs and bought myself an early birthday present. The rug was shipped from Pakistan on Monday, made its way to Dubai, then Boston, Memphis and finally arrived to us today. I couldn’t be happier!
