This beautiful vintage Indonesian Tampan textile, also known as a "ship cloth," is a ceremonial piece from the Lampung region of southern Sumatra. Traditionally used in rites of passage such as weddings or circumcisions, Tampan textiles symbolically represent journeys, both literal and spiritual, through their richly woven motifs.
Woven on a handloom with natural cotton, this tampan features a striking central motif of stylised ships, densely packed with human and animal figures, which signify community, social status, and cosmological beliefs. The ship is often interpreted as a metaphor for life's transitions, conveying individuals from one stage to the next. Boldly patterned in deep indigo, crimson, and ochre on an ivory ground, the design is bordered by intricate geometric bands and a row of spearhead-like shapes that resemble fertility or growth symbols.
Both a visual narrative and a sacred object, this textile embodies deep cultural significance and exquisite craftsmanship, making it a rare and expressive example of traditional Sumatran weaving artistry ideal for collectors, ethnographic enthusiasts, or as a unique wall display.
Authentic vintage and antique Indonesian textiles are handwoven with cotton. Each one is an exceptional work of art and unique.
